Distractions

In my venting yesterday I touched briefly on the problem of technology in our life. I had missed reading Dr. Mohler’s blog yesterday, but lo and behold he posted on this very issue.

People who cannot maintain mental attention cannot know the intimacy of prayer, and God does not maintain a Facebook page.

And, this is not just a problem for our youth.  I personally find myself more and more distracted while at work – as in writing up this post or reading Dr. Mohler’s blog, or checking out the latest hardware prices at www.NewEgg.com or checking out summer rentals at OBC, or reading up on the latest adoptable greyhounds that our group has at www.greyhoundwelfare.org or checking on my personal email because I might have something important from the diaconate that I’m now a part of, or double checking what the weather is going to be for this weekend at www.wunderground.com, and it goes on and on and on.

I honestly think sometimes it would be better for me both mentally and spiritually to be back behind the wheel of an 18 wheeler or to be back on a construction site.  At least with those careers I’m not plugged into the World Wide Web all day long.

If you have 3 minutes to be distracted I commend for your reading, ‘The Challenge of Attention in the Digital Age’.
